Pocari Sweat vs Aquarius: Which Hydration Drink Is Better?

Short answer: Pocari Sweat has more sodium, more than twice the potassium, and more sugar. Aquarius is lighter, with about 25% fewer calories and a thinner taste. For most workouts under an hour, either works. For heavy sweating or illness, neither is strong enough.

Quick comparison (per 500 ml bottle)

Label values are per 100 ml, multiplied by 5. Sodium is converted from the salt-equivalent line (salt × 0.393), so treat it as approximate.

Per liter (useful for comparing with other drinks):

  • Pocari Sweat: ~250 kcal, ~62 g carbs, ~470 mg sodium, ~200 mg potassium
  • Aquarius: ~180 kcal, ~46 g carbs, ~390 mg sodium, ~90 mg potassium

What the numbers mean

1. Sodium is close, and both are low.
They differ by only about 80 mg per liter. Sweat sodium varies widely between people, roughly 500–1,500 mg per liter. Standard WHO oral rehydration solution has about 1,700 mg per liter. Both drinks are far below that, so neither is a serious sodium replacement for heavy sweaters.

2. Potassium is the clearest difference.
Pocari has more than double the potassium. Potassium loss in sweat is small, so this matters less than the label suggests. It’s still a real difference if you want more minerals per bottle.

3. Sugar content is similar to other sports drinks, and Pocari has more.
Pocari’s ~31 g per bottle is about 8 teaspoons. Aquarius’s ~23 g is about 6. That extra sugar helps fuel longer sessions. For casual sipping it’s just extra calories.

4. Aquarius cuts sugar with sucralose.
Part of its sweetness comes from a zero-calorie sweetener, which keeps calories down. If you avoid artificial sweeteners, Pocari is the simpler label.

5. The amino acids in Aquarius are too small to matter.
It lists isoleucine, valine and leucine at about 1 mg or less per 100 ml. That’s a trace amount, not a performance benefit. cocacola

Taste

  • Pocari Sweat: Mild, slightly salty-sweet, with a soft citrus note. One comparison reviewer found Pocari has the milder taste. japanese-products
  • Aquarius: Lighter and more citrusy. After the 2025 reformulation, a reviewer who tried both found the new version slightly softer than the old. gigazine

Taste matters more than it sounds. The drink you actually finish hydrates you better than the one you leave half full.

Neither is clearly healthier. Aquarius has fewer calories and sugar. Pocari has more electrolytes and no artificial sweetener. Pick based on your goal.

Pocari Sweat, mainly because of its potassium.

Bottom line

Choose Aquarius for lighter, lower-calorie everyday exercise. Choose Pocari Sweat for longer or hotter sessions where you want more carbs and minerals. If you sweat heavily or you’re ill, step up to a proper electrolyte or oral rehydration product.
