Electrolit vs. Gatorlyte: What the Labels Say

Electrolit began as a rehydration medicine and Gatorlyte as a sports-science product, and their formulas still show it. All figures below come from U.S. retailer labels, and the per-litre numbers are my own arithmetic from those labels.

Where they came from

Electrolit started as an oral rehydration solution from Mexico’s PiSA pharmaceutical group, created during the 1950 cholera epidemic to treat dehydrated infants. Sources disagree on timing: Electrolit’s own site says 1950, while PiSA’s corporate timeline dates its first oral rehydration solutions to 1960. PiSA set up CAB Enterprises in 2014 as the exclusive U.S. distributor. Electrolit Beverage: The Leader in Hydration Gains Ground in USA +3

Gatorlyte is much younger. Gatorade launched it in 2021 as a three-product line of 20 oz bottles. The company says it came from years of trials by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Gatorade positions it as lower in carbohydrate than Thirst Quencher and aimed at heavy or salty sweaters. Gatorade Launches Rapid Hydration Drink +2

The numbers

Electrolit lists 70 calories, 18 g sugar, 250 mg sodium and 280 mg potassium per 12 fl oz serving. A 21 oz bottle holds about 1.75 servings, which is roughly 31 g sugar and 440 mg sodium. A 20 oz Gatorlyte carries 50 to 60 calories (depending on flavor), 12 g sugar, 490 mg sodium, 350 mg potassium, 1,040 mg chloride, 105 mg magnesium and 120 mg calcium. Bottle sizes differ, so I normalised both per litre: Electrolit Strawberry Electrolyte Beverage 21 oz +2

Per litreElectrolitGatorlyte
Sodium~690 mg (30 mmol)~830 mg (36 mmol)
Potassium~780 mg~590 mg
Sugar~50 g~20 g

Sugar: glucose vs sucrose

Electrolit’s sugar is dextrose, which is glucose. Glucose and sodium enter intestinal cells together through the SGLT1 transporter, and water follows. That coupling is the mechanism behind oral rehydration therapy. Gatorlyte uses plain sugar (sucrose), which splits into half glucose and half fructose. Fructose enters through a different transporter that is not sodium-coupled, so about half of Gatorlyte’s sugar skips that pathway. lowesfoodslowesfoods

The WHO’s reduced-osmolarity oral rehydration salts contain 75 mmol/L sodium and about 13.5 g/L glucose. Electrolit has roughly 40% of that sodium and nearly four times that sugar, so it is a sweeter sports-style drink despite its heritage. Gatorlyte lands closer on both counts, with about 48% of the sodium and about 1.5 times the sugar.

Electrolytes: what sweat actually loses

Average sweat sodium is near 40 mmol/L, with individual values running from roughly 10 to 90. Gatorlyte’s 36 mmol/L sits near that average, and Electrolit’s 30 falls below it. Sweat contains several times more sodium than potassium by mass. Electrolit has more potassium than sodium (280 mg vs 250 mg per serving), which inverts sweat’s pattern, while Gatorlyte’s 1.4:1 sodium-to-potassium ratio is closer to it.

Gatorlyte is far richer in minerals on paper. Its bottle supplies 25% of the daily value for magnesium. Electrolit’s serving lists 4% for magnesium and 2% for calcium, so Gatorlyte has about three to four times more magnesium per ounce. Its source is magnesium oxide, which dissolves poorly and absorbs less efficiently than the magnesium chloride in Electrolit. Sweat carries little magnesium or calcium anyway, so these numbers matter more on the label than for performance. Navigated to Product Details page +3

Lactate is the other difference. Electrolit counts lactate as one of its six ions. Lactate is a bicarbonate precursor, and the brand’s labels say it helps prevent acid buildup. Gatorlyte uses lactate only as the carrier for its calcium. lowesfoodsshoprite

Dyes and price

Gatorlyte advertises no artificial sweeteners or flavors, yet most flavors still use FD&C dyes such as Red 40, Blue 1 or Yellow 6, as do Electrolit’s. On price, a 21 oz Electrolit was listed near $0.14 per fl oz in an August 2026 promotion and a 20 oz Gatorlyte near the same at one retailer, so price does not separate them. Evidence gap

I found no independent head-to-head trial of the two. Gatorlyte’s rapid-rehydration claim rests on research from Gatorade’s own institute. gatorade

Which to pick

  • Heavy or salty sweaters (white salt crust on clothing): Gatorlyte gives more sodium per ounce with less sugar. The zero-sugar version keeps the same electrolytes at 15 calories. lowesfoods
  • Sessions over an hour where fuel helps: Electrolit’s ~50 g/L carbohydrate is closer to a standard sports drink. The leading sports drink Gatorlyte benchmarks against has 34 g per 20 oz, or about 57 g/L. lowesfoods
  • Diarrheal illness, especially in children: neither matches the WHO formula, so use a true oral rehydration salt and ask a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Kidney disease or potassium limits: both contain potassium, Electrolit more per litre, so check with your clinician first.

Pick Electrolit when you want some carbohydrate with your fluid, and Gatorlyte when you want more sodium and magnesium with less sugar.
